A report from PC services company Soluto claims the "best performing" Windows laptop is one that wasn't primarily made to be used with Windows: Apple's MacBook Pro.
In creating this report, Soluto claims to have looked at 150,000 laptops, 224,144 crashes and 84,251 blue screens during three months. The result? Apple's 13-inch MacBook Pro from mid-2012 had the fewest crashes per week and hangs per week, with a total score of 1.05 (less is better).
It's followed by a 15-inch Acer Aspire E1-571 with a 1.12 score and a Dell XPS 13, whose score was 1.28.
Soluto readily admits that the MacBook pro has a clear advantage. "A main factor in this machine’s metrics is the fact that every Windows installation on it is clean. With PC manufacturers loading so much crapware on new laptops, this is a bit of an unfair competition," says the report.
Still, Soluto thinks its methodology makes sense. "One of our next reports will include a separate comparison of only cleanly-installed machines. But – for this first report we simply compared the real PCs in the field, some with original images and some reinstalled by their users. We believe it’s more representative of reality," the report says.
Another Apple laptop made the top 10 list — the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro, which scored 2.51 and placed 6. The rest of the list is dominated by Dell, and the only other manufacturers on the list (besides Apple, Acer and Dell) is Lenovo, whose Thinkpad X1 Carbon sits at 10th place with a score of 3.20.
